George Massing , prominent Montgomery County farmer, died at 12:10 a.m. Thursday at Culver Hospital. Mr. Massing, 82, had been in serious condition for a week and in poor health for the last four years. He and his wife, who survives, made their home on their farm west of New Ross. In addition to his farm operations, Mr. Massing was well known as a livestock dealer. He was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church. For most of his life he had been active in the Democratic party organization. Born on Oct. 18, 1885, on a farm near Linden, he was a son of John and India Massing. He was reared in this county, and in 1909 married Lulu Brown. She preceded him in death. In 1952, he married LaVon Duckworth Smith. Surviving are a son, Hubert of Crawfordsville; a daughter, Helen Massing of Indianapolis; two stepchildren, Margaret Blair of South Bend and Cecil Smith of Greencastle; two sisters, Mrs. Frona Hepner of Springfield and Mrs. Teresa McClure of Crawfordsville; a brother, William of Washington, D.C. , and seven stepgrandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Bernard’s with Rt. Rev. Monsignor Henry F. Ward officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Friday at Hunt & Son Funeral Home. – jlr
